Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, Transfusion, Cytology and Histology reports are all available.

Usually within minutes of reports being authorised within Pathology, results from Biochemistry, Haematology, Microbiology, Transfusion, Cytology and Histology will be available for computer result enquiry on Good Hope wards.  Certain reports such as Histology/Cytology can only be viewed by specified classes of user.
Results are transferred from the Pathology computer to an I.T. Department Oracle database.
PCs on Good Hope wards can then access this information through the PaWS system.
However, PaWS is much more than just a Pathology results lookup system.

PaWS (Patient WorkStation)

At Good Hope Hospital the EPR (Electronic Patient Record) system is PaWS, which stands for Patient Workstation. PaWS was designed initially to make PAS information, such as inpatient episodes and waiting list details, readily available to staff around the hospital. It provides many search facilities to look for a patient by name, inpatients on a particular ward and waiting list details for a particular consultant.
Looking up Pathology results on a ward PaWS also displays :
  • Pathology test results for Haematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Histology, Transfusion and Cytology.
  • Control of infection patient flagging & treatment guidelines for isolates of :-
           MRSA
           ESBL
( Extended Spectrum BetaLactamase producing bacteria)
             C.Difficille.
  • Radiology reports
  • Theatre appointments and episodes
  • Endoscopy reports
  • Pharmacy prescriptions
  • Accident & Emergency  visits.

PaWS also has a facility to add documents. This allowed users to set up templates to automatically add merge fields, such as patient name and address, to a document.
These documents are then available to all relevant members of staff even when the paper notes are unavailable.

PaWS is available from most locations within Good Hope hospital.  To gain entry to the PaWS system, new members of staff must obtain a unique user identifier and password from the I.T. Department. All enquiries relating to PaWS must initially be reported to the Trust I.T. Department (Ext 1405)
