Call for second pregnancy scans

Women in Scotland should be offered at least two scans during their pregnancy, an NHS watchdog has said.

NHS Quality Improvement Scotland wants to end the so-called "postcode lottery" which exists for ultrasound tests.

A spokesman said such a move would give mothers-to-be reassurance about their babies' health.

But the Royal College of Midwives warned that a mandatory second scan could raise anxieties for some women.

Scottish director Patricia Purton said: "We very much welcome the opportunity for choice, and we certainly support getting rid of this postcode lottery where some women have one scan, some women have two and some women are refused a second scan.
