Sixth formers inspired by visit to Good Hope

Sixth form pupils were given an insight into what it is like to work in a busy hospital thanks to the first careers weekend held at Good Hope Hospital.

In all, 58 teenagers from six schools in Sutton Coldfield took part in the two-day course (on Oct 15 and 16) that will now become an annual event.

Consultant Histopathologist Rasul Singh, who organised the event, said the response from the pupils who attended had been extremely positive.

She added: “We gave them a questionnaire at the end and the course was described as inspirational, thought provoking and extremely useful.

“We’re were equally impressed with the level of interest they showed in their local hospital and their commitment to attend such an event for the whole weekend.

“Many of the pupils said the experience had helped them decide on future careers. We want to encourage young people to consider working in the NHS, and at Good Hope Hospital in particular.”

Doctors, nurses, managers, technicians and volunteers all supported the weekend’s activity. Guest speakers included the Trust’s Chairman Graham Comfort and its Chief Executive Anne Heast.

Among the areas the pupils were taken to see were wards, the intensive therapy unit, the pathology department and the hospital’s new Treatment Centre.

Advisors from the Connexions careers service and the NHS careers bus were also at the hospital to provide advice and information.

Dr Singh said: “We want to make this an annual event and to expand it so more schools and pupils can become involved.”

Schools that sent pupils were: Bishop Vesey Grammar, Sutton Coldfield Girls Grammar, Bishop Walsh Catholic School, Fairfax, John Wilmott and High Clare.
