Concentrating on the positive

It's very easy to only see the negative and forget the achievements and milestones which Good Hope has achieved through the years. Hopefully this area of the web site will to address the balance a little.

Patient improvements
Good Hope is cited as among the best cancer treatment hospitals in the West Midlands by a Cancer Peer Group Review. A follow up assessment in April 2003 has confirmed Good Hope’s continuing progress.

An innovative nurse-initiated service has seen tremendous improvements in treatment times for patients who need life-saving heart treatment. This has led to the Trust achieving nationally set targets.

A successful ‘early discharge’ scheme is helping to reduce waiting times for patients needing orthopaedic surgery. The Intermediate Care Service enables patients to receive specialised care in designated nursing homes, releasing hospital beds for other patients.

Ten Modern Matrons have been appointed to help drive up standards of patient care across the hospital.

A ‘See and Treat’ approach to managing patients in A&E has been introduced in January to help tackle waiting times in the department.

421 brand new electronic beds have replaced old beds on wards.

Staff improvements
Awards Ceremonies are held during the year to honour Good Hope staff, as nominated by patients and colleagues.

Good Hope Hospital NHS Trust has received national recognition from the Health and Safety Executive for its pioneering work on stress prevention for staff. The hospital is one of a handful of public and private sector organisations that have been awarded a prestigious HSE ‘Beacon in Stress Prevention’.

Vascular Research Nurse Sue Hayes received national recognition when she chosen as runner-up in the ‘Essence of care in wound care’ category of the Nursing Times Awards 2002.

Mark Radford is the country’s first Nurse Consultant in Emergency Surgery.
He made the leap from his pioneering role as Clinical Nurse Specialist, Emergency Surgery, which was devised by Good Hope three years ago to speed up the process of getting emergency patients needing surgery into the hospital’s theatres.

Technology

Trust Development and Modernisation
The Sterile Services department has undergone a major upgrade following investment of £500,000.

A new Emergency Assessment Unit has located all the ‘front of house’ services in the same area, closer to the Accident and Emergency Department.

Good Hope’s successful electronic bookings scheme has received national praise in the NHS National Booking Programme.

Improvements in the food provided at Good Hope have been recognised when a review by a Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) awarded the Trust a yellow rating for catering, moving it out of the red zone.

In recognition of the standards of clinical training provided at Good Hope, the Trust was conferred with full Teaching Status from the University of Birmingham during
2002-03.

The new Partnership Learning Centre has opened, to run in conjunction with the Education Centre.

The Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Centre was opened following an injection of £660,000 from the Action on Orthopaedics programme. This encompasses an integrated facility:

  • Trauma, Orthopaedic and Rheumatology
  • Orthotic Clinics
  • Plaster Room
  • Pre-Op Assessment Clinics
  • Occupational Therapy, physiotherapy, orthopaedic consultants, secretarial support and orthopaedic community scheme.

A £2.2 million modernisation scheme for maternity wards 4 and 5 has been completed.
The new facilities include two 23-bedded security access wards comprising:

  • Three-bedded post-natal areas with en-suite facilities
  • Single rooms with en-suite facilities to enable partners to stay during induction or early labour
  • Specifically designed rooms for women with special needs
  • Increased security with video phone entry system

Major progress is being made on the development of the new Treatment Centre which is due to open in December 2004.
The £17.8 million centre will completely change the way services are delivered at Good Hope with the emphasis on providing treatment and healing in best way for patients.
